The client assembled a team of consultants that could contribute to the programme for this event, which was aimed at innovative concepts for city gardens.
The project demanded an international team of designers from various cultures that would lend shape to selected sites in Rotterdam, all based on the theme of hortus conclusus: enclosed inner garden, city park, urban outdoor space. Additional events were a symposium and an exhibition of the designs (organized in collaboration with the Witte de With Gallery). The client asked the SAG for someone who was part author, part lecturer and part observer (for the symposium).
The following section offers two statements made by Erik de Jong (in a book published by NAi Publishers in the spring of 2002 and in the Clusius Lectures, published by the Clusius Foundation in 2001).
