An initiative of the South Kennemerland Museum Foundation, the Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem), the Pieter Vermeulen Museum (IJmuiden), Museum Beeckestein (Velsen) and Teylers Museum (Haarlem) led to the SAG’s short-term study of the characteristics of the Kennemerland landscape. The goal was to develop a plan of action, based on the information gathered, that would showcase the landscape and make it the focus of public interest during the 2002 Floriade.
The accompanying report included an analysis of the topographic qualities of the Kennemerland landscape, of the spatial transformations involved and of changes relating to the appreciation of the dune area. This analysis became the foundation of a matrix for accommodating activities designed to call attention to the Kennemerland landscape. The report led to a supplementary subsidy from the Province of North Holland. Further development of the project by a Dutch organization linked to both museums and history – the Stichting Museaal en Historisch Perspectief – is currently being prepared by the Foundation for Art and Culture under the title ‘Land in Sight’.
